  • December 17, 2022 – Yamas and Niyamas by Deborah Adele  (192 pgs.) The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras – the basic text for classical yoga – are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action. The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas – a Sanskrit word that translates to “restraints” – and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, non-excess, and non-possessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances – purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.
  • January 21, 2023 – Poser: My Life in Twenty-three Yoga Poses by Claire Dederer (347 pgs.)Ten years ago, Claire Dederer threw her back out breastfeeding her baby daughter. Told to try yoga by everyone from the woman behind the counter at the co-op to the homeless guy on the corner, she signed up for her first class. She fell madly in love. Over the next decade, she would tackle triangle, wheel, and the dreaded crow, becoming fast friends with some poses and developing long-standing feuds with others. At the same time, she found herself confronting the forces that shaped her generation. Daughters of women who ran away to find themselves and made a few messes along the way, Dederer and her peers grew up determined to be good, good, good—even if this meant feeling hemmed in by the smugness of their organic-buying, attachment-parenting, anxiously conscientious little world. Yoga seemed to fit right into this virtuous program, but to her surprise, Dederer found that the deeper she went into the poses, the more they tested her most basic ideas of what makes a good mother, daughter, friend, wife—and the more they made her want something a little less tidy, a little more improvisational. Less goodness, more joy.

As Marley’s blind ambition veers into madness, Ronnie fears for her life.
  • March 18, 2023 – April 15, 2023 – Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda (677 pgs.)When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as “a rare account”. Newsweek pronounced it “fascinating”. The San Francisco Chronicle declared, “Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who ‘came to scoff’ may remain ‘to pray.” Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East. This audio edition, featuring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley’s masterful narration, contains the complete text of Paramahansa Yogananda’s life story, an absorbing account of a singular search for Truth. Yogananda describes his experiences with modern-day saints and illuminated masters of India, and presents a definitive introduction to the whole science and philosophy of Yoga.
